Bolton Wanderers has shown how football can be better run all over the country, one of the borough’s MPs has said.

This comes after Whites chairman Sharon Brittan told a committee of MPs at Westminster that she believes the current Premier League set up is “not fit for purpose.”

One of the MPs to be addressed at the meeting was Chris Green, of Bolton West, and he says he hopes Ms Brittan’s point about the need for an independent regulator will be heeded.

Mr Green said: “Football is more than just a game, it's something that really brings communities together and no one expresses this better than Bolton Wanderers chairman Sharon Brittan.

“The Football Governance Bill, which I’m helping take through parliament is about improving governance and ensuring that owners have a greater sense of responsibility towards fans and clubs.

“And this also aims to ensure that the wealth at the top of the football pyramid is more equitably shared.

“Since the premiership was founded, we’ve had amazing global success, and we want to make sure that there’s not too much of a barrier between divisions.

“Because we need that sense of jeopardy that means clubs can go down and also that clubs can go up and stay up.”

Mr Green heard evidence from Ms Brittan as part of a select committee at the House of Commons gathering evidence for the Football Governance Bill.

The committee also includes former minister for sport Tracey Crouch MP and has been looking at new independent regulation for the top five tiers of the English game.

Ms Brittan also used her appearance at the committee to raise concerns about the influence of overseas owners on the Premier League against the rest of the game.

Addressing the committee, she said: “The Premier League has allowed 13 of our precious 20 clubs to be owned by Americans.

“It needs just one more and they have the vote, how has that been allowed to happen?

“The Premier League stop FA Cup replays without consulting us. How has that been allowed to happen?

“The Premier League is not fit for purpose, in my opinion.”

The bill has passed its second reading and after the current committee stage will go for a third reading before being sent to the House of Lords.

After passing through the Lords, it will then go on for Royal Assent before it eventually becomes law.
