A PEDESTRIAN was left with serious head injuries and a broken leg after he was hit by a car on the East Lancashire Road.

The man, aged 20, was hit by a Mercedes E320 at 2.40am on Saturday on the westbound carriageway of the road near Astley.

The man was taken to Salford Royal Hospital with a serious head injury and a broken leg, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

The 38-year-old driver of the Mercedes, from Leigh, was uninjured.

The road was closed from the junction of Higher Green Lane while investigations were carried out, but was reopened at about 5am.
