A driver claims he flipped his car onto its roof after swerving to avoid a deer that ran out in the road in Bromley Cross.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene after the car overturned in Darwen Road just after 7.15pm.

The incident happened at the railway bridge where Darwen Road meets Chapeltown Road.

The driver told police that a deer had run out into the road in front of the car, causing him to swerve and flip the car onto its roof.

The male driver and male passenger were unharmed in the incident, but the car was severely damaged.

Worried onlookers called the fire service because they thought that the vehicle was smoking, but when crews arrived they found it was just steam from the car's burst radiator.

The road was closed from about 7.30pm but reopened later.
