A WESTHOUGHTON teenager is hoping pop superstar Kylie Minogue’s three decades in the music business will help kickstart his own successful career.

Joe Keegan, aged 16, an A Level student at Thornleigh Salesian College, landed a place on the Aussie singer’s team on Saturday’s episode of The Voice UK.

He had to choose between the Can't Get You Out of My Head singer and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson, who both turned their chairs during his performance of Ben Howard’s Keep Your Head Up.

The folk singer said: “It was completely surreal. I still can’t quite believe it happened.

“It’s weird when you walk out on stage, it’s completely silent and you look out and there’s four massive chairs.

“Everything is a lot bigger than you think it’s going to be.”

A keen musician, Joe writes his own songs and also plays the piano, guitar, flute, ukulele and drums.

His dream would be to emulate the success of his superstar mentor, Kylie, who has sold more than 32 million records worldwide.

Joe, who went to Bolton School and then Thornleigh from year 10, said: “Obviously I would’ve been happy with anybody. I think everyone has got an idea of who they want to turn around for them.

“It was a difficult decision, all the producers were telling me to think before you go on, think about who you would pick if they did turn round.

“It was still really difficult but I felt that Kylie has had one of the most successful careers as a recording artist on the planet and that I’ve got to go with her.

“It was brilliant. As soon as Kylie turned round, I couldn’t believe it, I thought, I’m face to face with ‘the’ Kylie Minogue.”

Joe is the second talented Boltonian to impress the show’s coaches, with Vicky Jones, aged 29, from Bromley Cross, the sister of McFly’s Danny Jones, landing a spot on Sir Tom Jones’ team last month.

Joe, who is also a keen Irish dancer, added: “I didn’t expect to get anything from it. It’s turned out pretty well.”
