Pay freeze for councillors

The Bolton News: Bolton Town Hall Bolton Town Hall

COUNCILLORS will feel the pinch of cuts as officers look to freeze their allowances, reduce subsidised parking and cut the amount of printing of council documents.

Cash-strapped Bolton Council has come up with a series of cost-cutting measures in a bid to save £100,000 from the members’ budget.

Plans include reducing the amount of paper printed for meetings to save £21,000, freezing councillors’ allowances to save £18,000 and stopping the funding for external training courses, worth £15,000.

From April, councillors will also be asked to pay more to park in the Octagon car park— up to £20 instead of £15 a month, saving about £6,000 for the council.

In addition, £10,000 worth of funding for extraordinary civic events — such as the street celebration for Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny — will have to be found elsewhere.

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, welcomed the move and said it was only right that members’ budgets were looked at.

The Labour leader said: “It was a bit unfair for us to expect others to take cuts and for us not to look at our own budget.

“So we’ve looked at our budget and it’s £100,000 that we’ve found.”

But deputy leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Andy Morgan, said he does not believe the cutbacks go far enough.

In an alternative budget, which will be presented to full council on Wednesday evening, the group is calling for councillors to take a 25 per cent pay cut across the board. Cllr Morgan said: “We welcome the suggestions but we don’t think we’re going far enough.”

Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Roger Hayes said the council should go further and look at reducing the “special responsibility” budget for the most senior councillors — including his own.

He said: “All of these proposals need doing. I’m happy to pay more to park the car and for my basic allowance to be frozen. I think it’s a pity that the training budget has been cut, but there’s nothing on that list I disagree with.”

How on earth is it going to save eighteen thousand pound by having a pay freeze perhaps it meant that they were going to award themselves 18 grand but decided against it, a big pay cut would have been better plus take away their free phone, internet, subsi
dised parking, laptop, printer including the paper they use for it, the FREE booze when they get invited to the mayors parlor, plus ALL the other incidentals the greedy Bas***** claim for. they should be ashamed of themselves

Why were these cuts not done 7 years ago along with the cuts to teh Coumncil staff - how much could have been saved over that period?

Also why not stop the printing and dstribution of the propaganda leaflet - akak Bolton Scene - that will save quite a bit of money as well.

Also why a subsidy for the Octogon car-park? why can't the councillors pay the same as everyone else - thus saving even more money (as yes you can get season tickets for teh car-park) plus it will be fun soon as that car park will be the cloest car park for the station, when the station car park closes, so space will be in demand!!!!!

My heart goes out to the council. Freezing the allowances, cutting down on the printing and freezing the external training courses, and have to pay £5.00 more car parking fee, namely £20.00 a month. ( that's sounds very cheap).
Surely the best way to save a substantial amount of money is to decrease the pensiont pot for the council officers and executives to a nominal amount, until such time as the council will be able to top up the pension pot, once more! The measurements announced are intendent to create sympathy with the Bolton citizen. Sorry, like in most cases, the council is just a joke.

I have always maintained that they don't need 3 councillors per ward
2 would suffice even though they would strenuously deny it

It would be better to cut councillors to two in each ward the basic allowance is around 10k those with special responsibilities get and extra 11k and leaders even more parking used to be free when attending meetings which is fare but many parked in there to go shopping which is wrong and should pay the laptops only connect to the intranet for council work the Bolton scene is used to promote the Labour group and should be stopped only councillors and civic dignitaries should be invited to the Mayors inauguration and the spouse meal should cancelled the other benefits mentioned in these comments simply don't exist councillors even pay for their own fuel to go to meetings on town councils they get nothing people should not believe everything they hear and check the facts if they cut one councillor from each ward they would save 20k

What breathtaking hypocrisy from a man who has claimed a Special Responsibility allowance from the Council's budget for the last two years, for being the Leader of a Party of three Councillors (one of which is himself!).

No wonder the Lib Dems are so close to extinction in Bolton!
