MAXINE Peake has been nominated in the leading actress category in this year’s British Academy Television Awards for her role in BBC1 epic period drama The Village.

The Bolton actress will go up against Helena Bonham Carter, for her performance as Elizabeth Taylor in Burton and Taylor, Broadchurch’s Olivia Colman and Kerrie Hayes, for her role as Esther Price in The Mill.

The nominations for the soap and continuing drama award are Casualty, Coronation Street, EastEnders and Holby City while Borgen, Breaking Bad, House of Cards and The Returned will battle it out in the international category.

The nominees for reality and constructed factual are The Big Reunion, Dragons’ Den, Gogglebox and The Undateables.

The ceremony will be held at the Theatre Royal in London on May 18.
