FIREFIGHTERS are en route to help a man who has become stranded near a river in Leigh.

Crews were called just before 9pm after reports that the man had gone into the river near Plank Lane to retrieve his dog.

It is thought that he managed to get himself and the dog out of the water but found himself stranded on an embankment on the opposite side of the river.

Crews from Leigh are en route as well as a water incident unit from Eccles.

From the photo, it would seem that a fire engine from Garston in Hertfordshire attended the scene, as well.

Come on BN - we can read, we don't need generic pictures! Likewise, please drop the motorway road sign for any story to do with the M61.
