Wheelie bins in Halliwell to be 'tagged' to let people know if they're being used properly

The Bolton News: Wheelie bins in Halliwell to be 'tagged' to let people know if they're being used properly Wheelie bins in Halliwell to be 'tagged' to let people know if they're being used properly

BINS will be “tagged” with labels telling residents whether they are recycling correctly or not.

Bolton Council is launching the Right Stuff, Right Bin, pilot scheme in Halliwell.

Funded by Recycle for Greater Manchester it involves educating residents about what can and cannot go in the recycling bins.

Residents living in the campaign area will either be left a green ‘thank you’ tag on bins that contain the correct items for recycling, or a red ‘wrong stuff, wrong bin’ tag.

If they have put incorrect items in the recycling bins, these bins will not be collected, however the tag will include a reminder of which items can go in their bin for next time.

Cllr Elaine Sherrington, cabinet member for waste, recycling and housing at Bolton Council, said: “A large number of people in the borough already work hard at recycling most of their waste.

“However, some people still struggle to identify the correct items for each bin and this could be for a number of reasons.

“It is always good to try new ideas to raise the level of recycling, which in turn saves the town money.

“I hope people will get involved with this new initiative which should make a difference.”

Council bosses want to ensure residents understand items such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, plastic food trays and carrier bags cannot be recycled and should go in the grey bin.

The Right Stuff, Right Bin campaign will be rolled out over the next eight weeks, and if it is a success will be expanded into other parts of Bolton. The campaign message to ‘recycle right’ will be backed up by leaflets, posters and a team visiting houses on the chosen bin collection round.

A roadshow hosted by Key 103 will take place at Morrisons, Chorley Old Road, on Thursday, and residents are encouraged to go along if they need any recycling help or advice.

How much more money is going to be poured down the recycling drain and wasted?

Councillors dont listen to the public of Bolton so why should the public take any notice of these silly antics?

Have Bolton councillors never heard that you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink. Get real.

Recycling is an utter waste of time.

It's only the green eco lobby that want to encourage us to spend time fiddling through the minutae of our waste and separate it out into defined categories.

This eco ritual make zero economic sense and has zero positive impact on the environment. Landfill is far easier and can be far more economic, were it not for the punitive charges levied by government.

The only reason why greens want us to do it, is because the physical inconvenience serves as a daily reminder of our ugly wasteful destructive existence on the planet. It's a way of issuing a daily guilt trip to make us think about how we are destroying the planet and how we should feel really really bad about our actions.

This has everything to do with the sending of a moral message than saving money. The sooner local politicians stop pandering to the green lobby the better.

Knee jerk activity here in fairness to try and reduce landfill tax, The Council need to get its Three MP,s to lobby Central Government to make food suppliers use containers that can be recycled same goes for the MEP,s in Europe.
Mind you I have been campaigning some time for action over pollution that is directly harming our children, the diesel fumes from static vehicles parked near children such as ice cream vans, free town centre buses parked up with engines running, taxis and other buses doing the same. But no response apart from a Manchester MEP,s secretary

Ps if you do get recycling right do you really need a well done sticker?

I personally don't have a problem with knowing which bin to use. Many of my neighbours never put their recycling bins out for collection because everything goes in their grey bins. Why don't the Council challenge them first?
On the subject of bins, have you seen the binmen pick up your bin and empty it into one of your neighbours bins? I asked the Council if they thought it was a health & safety risk, lifting heaven bins, but apparently it's ok!!

Then there is no excuse, no language barrier, no excuses if you make a mess of it.

Simple cheap and effective. It could even be done by community payback following the bin wagons on foot, or even the council apprentices.

I would be happy if people in the Windsor Grove area of Halliwell would actually use a bin! The amount of rubbish thrown into the back streets in carrier bags, black bags, or just loose is a disgrace. The council come to clean it up, and the next week it's just as bad. If people can't be educated to be considerate, decent human beings, what hope is there for them bothering to use the correct bin?

If the lid is open just an inch then its classed as not safe to empty it so called health and safty but in salford there lids dont close or theres excess at the side of there bins and they take it. Are we not all under greater manchester.bolton council being petty wasting council tax money on tags .why dont they use the money to employ staff to sort it. 30 years ago 1 bin for everything. Prices have risen every year now we have 4 bins and we do the recycling and if its not to there standards there not emptying them wheres our value for money what exactly do we pay for.

Council tenants nearby leave bins outside at the end of an alley all week, encouraging passers by to add to the mountain, of course the overfilled bins aren't emptied, the adjacent car park is used to dump unwanted items, the nearby shops pile rubbish against their back walls, pallets, things like that, I suppose they think these items might be usefull to someone. Cobbled back streets behind halliwell rd are chocked with filth, I've never seen anything like it, compared to my birthplace, hallithwood, halliwell is a nightmare.
