YOUNG entrepreneurs set their stall out at Bolton Market as they traded places with the grown-ups to show them how it’s done.

Members of Bolton Lads and Girls Club sold a range of bath products and cosmetics which they had made themselves — as part of Love Your Local Market fortnight.

They also learned how to cash up and how to manage money as they sold bath bombs, lip balms, bath salts and candles.

Gabriella Guarino, an enterprise youth worker at the club, said: “It’s a really good life lesson for these kids. They have been brilliant and they’ve loved coming into the market and selling things.

“They’ve learned how to be business people and how to be employable in the future.

“They’ve also had to manage money and profit margins and they’ve handmade all these products themselves using natural ingredients.”

Alex Whelan, aged 11, was one of the young entrepeneurs taking part in the event.

Alex, who was a cashier for the day, said: “I’m very excited to be here — enterprise is something I’m interested in and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while.

“Doing something like this makes you want to do more.

“It’s the skills of life we are learning today, such as how to manage money, so it’s very important that we take part.”

Another youngster testing her sales skills was Jodie Cunliffe, aged 13.

Jodie said: “I feel very confident being a market trader and I’ve had fun selling these products.

“It took us about five or six weeks to make them, but it’s a rewarding feeling now that we’re selling them to people.

“It’s important for all of us to get more people supporting Bolton Market.”

Cllr John Byrne, Bolton Council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “Bolton has a long and proud market history spanning more than 750 years.

“The Love Your Local Market campaign celebrates our markets and highlights the importance that markets play at the heart of the community.”
