Enterprising 10-year-old Westhoughton girl raises almost £10,000 by selling dog biscuits
A PRIMARY school pupil is set to take her fundraising for animal rescue centres past the £10,000 mark when she hosts her second dog show next month.
Aged just 10, entrepreneurial Scarlett Berry, from Westhoughton, has raised most of the cash through selling homemade dog biscuits, a venture she started at just eight.
On June 28, the Bury Grammar School for Girls pupil will welcome pet lovers to Central Park, Westhoughton for the second Barking Berry’s Dog Show.
Scarlett, who lives at Redwood, wants to become a vet and last year was nominated for Young Animal Enthusiast Of the Year at the Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards.
Her mother, Mrs Sarah Dunscombe-Berry, said their weekends have been taken over with baking dog biscuits while they have also taken in three rescue dogs.
The family’s last summer holiday was to Ireland to visit an animal rescue centre and Scarlett was allowed to sign dogs out of local pounds and into the centre.
She even managed to persuade her dad, Martin Berry, to take home their third rescue dog.
Mercy joined Mini and Bentley in the family and Mrs Dunscombe-Berry added: “My husband says we’re not going to Ireland again in case we end up with a fourth.
Scarlett, though, realises there comes a point when you have to say goodbye.
Mrs Dunscombe-Berry added: “Scarlett grew up with Scooby, he was her best friend, but in 2012 we had to have him put down as he had cancer.
“We picked Scarlett up from school and took her to say goodbye and she was so brave while I was crying.”
Horse and bird rescuers will also attend the June 28 dog show, which will feature 15 classes, 40 stalls, children’s activities and run from 11am to 4pm.
All funds raised will benefit Bolton Destitute Animal Shelter and Dogs Trust Merseyside with Scarlett’s efforts already having made nearly £9,000 for animal rescue charities.
With last year’s maiden dog show raising £3,000, she seems certain to break the £10,000 barrier.
Scarlett said: “The awards were brilliant as I got to meet so many famous people but there's nothing as exciting as our show.
“It was such good fun and this year I'm going to make sure it is better than ever.”
