THE Octagon Theatre is inviting young men to audition for the chance to appear in two plays which are being staged to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.

Journey’s End, based on RC Sherriff’s own experience of the Great War, is written with the authenticity of a soldier who was familiar with the nightmare of life in the trenches and the courage of those who fought there.

It will be the first play of the theatre’s 2014/15 season, from September 4 to October 4.

Early One Morning, written by Bolton playwright Les Smith, is based on the true story of 26-year-old soldier James Smith and will be staged from October 9 to November 1.

The soldier, from Bolton, fought in some of the fiercest battles of World War One — he was wounded, promoted and received two Good Conduct medals before standing trial for desertion.

No previous acting experience is necessary to be in the community company, although some singing ability would be beneficial.

David Thacker, the Octagon’s artistic director, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who would like to develop their acting skills, perform on the Octagon stage and have the experience of working with a professional cast and creative team in a large scale production.”

Participants must be aged 18 and over, with a playing age of 18 to 30 and must have enthusiasm and commitment.

All applicants must fill in an application form and return it to the Octagon by Wednesday, July 23, and invited auditions will be held on Sunday, July 27.

There will be two teams of six required for Journey’s End, who will perform on a rotating schedule. A separate team of eight is required for Early One Morning. All of the Community Company roles being cast are voluntary and no expenses will be paid.
