A YOUNG animal lover has now raised £10,000 for good causes after hosting a second charity dog show.

On Saturday Scarlett Berry, aged 10, hosted the Barking Berry’s fun day in Central Park, Westhoughton, in aid of Bolton Destitute Animal Shelter and Dogs Trust Merseyside.

The Bury Grammar School Girls pupil raised £1,325 for needy animals on the day, meaning her total fundraising mission has now broken the £10,000 mark.

Scarlett, from Westhoughton, has always wanted to be a vet and begun baking homemade dog biscuits to raise cash for animal rescue charities at the age of eight.

Last year she was nominated for Young Animal Enthusiast of the Year at the Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards, where she met her idol, Ben Fogle.

About 50 dogs competed in 15 canine show classes including Glossiest Coat, Prettiest Bitch, Waggiest Tail, Dog Most Like its Owner and Barkiest Dog with both pooches and their owners enjoying flyball and agility games.

Scarlett said: “It was great to help so many different charities. We have not done as well as last year, when we raised £3,000, because it started raining.

“My favourite category was dog fancy dress — there was one dog dressed as a Roman emperor, and another wearing a tutu.

“But I am really excited to have broken the £10,000 mark. I am very tired now though.” Horse and bird rescue organisations also attended the dog show, which featured 50 stalls and was judged by veterinary nurse Gemma Yates from Darley House Vet Centre in Farnworth and trainee vet Alice Leach.

Julie Hilling, MP for Bolton West, was also at the event and invited Scarlett to the Houses of Parliament to congratulate her on her charitable efforts.

Scarlett’s proud mum Sarah Dunscombe-Berry added: “It has been a fantastic day and lots of people came out to support us, which was great.”
