YOUNG people in Bolton are leaders, not followers, thanks to the support of Turton Rotary Club.

The club is sponsoring the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), where candidates are selected from local schools to take part in a course designed to develop their skills.

This year, pupils have been chosen from Sharples School to take in the five-day course at Petty Pool Outdoor Centre in Northwich, Cheshire, which includes outdoor activities involving leadership and team-working skills.

Jeff Todd, who co-ordinates the scheme for Turton Rotary Club, said: “We are keen to support local students and the RYLA programme enables young people to debate issues of professional responsibility, improve leadership and communication skills.

“They wil also meet Rotarians while having fun and making friends.

“It also provides the opportunity to refine skills and explore pertinent topics with their peers and elders.”
