TWO 17-year-old boys arrested on suspicion of raping a 13-year-old in a Great Lever park have been released on bail.

The teenagers were arrested on suspicion of rape on Friday night, shortly after the alleged attack, but have now been released on police bail.

Officers are now appealing for information about the incident after they were called to Tootal Park, also known as Sunnyside Park, off Higher Swan Lane, at 9.45pm.

They attended the scene and cordoned off a small corner patch of land adjacent to Back Higher Swan Lane, and at the rear of a row of properties.

They say inquiries are now continuing as nearby residents spoke of their shock after hearing about the incident.

An Auberson Road resident said: “It came as a big shock. That park is well-used by children and families. It’s terrible for something like that to happen to a girl, especially one so young.”

Another Chelsea Road resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s scary to think a girl that age was raped right on our doorstep.

“I have a teenage daughter and it’s terrifying. I hope the police do what needs to be done.”

One Higher Swan Lane resident, who also did not wish to be named, added: “There is a problem with anti-social behaviour around here during the holidays.

“You get groups of young people up until 2am drinking, shouting and smashing bottles.

“There is a lot of noise comes from that park but I was very surprised to hear about something as serious as that.”

A police spokesman said, under new legislation currently going through parliament, the two suspects were being treated as juveniles.

“We would appeal to anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward,” she added.
