  • January, 2010 The Baroness Morris of Bolton OBE DL DPhil LLD becomes the first Chancellor 
  • September, 2008 HRH The Earl of Wessex opens the new Social Learning Zone, and celebrates the opening of a new campus in Ras al Khaimah, UAE 
  • 2005 The Privy Council gives approval for the title The University of Bolton 
  • Professor George E Holmes is appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University 
  • 2004 Bolton Institute of Higher Education becomes Britain’s newest university 
  • 1995 Bolton Institute of Higher Education receives research degree awarding powers 
  • 1992 Bolton Institute of Higher Education receives its own taught degree awarding powers
  • 1981 Bolton Institute of Technology merges with the College of Education (Technical) to become the new Bolton Institute of Higher Education. The Art College joins a year later 
  • 1970 Princess Margaret opens the Bolton Institute of Technology new buildings at the Deane Road campus 
  • 1964 Bolton Technical College divides into two organisations — Bolton Technical College and Bolton Institute of Technology 
  • 1952 Bolton Technical College new building opens on Manchester Road 
  • 1926 The much-expanded Technical School becomes Bolton Technical College 
  • 1892 The new Bolton Technical School opens 
  • 1868 Bolton Mechanics’ Institute’s new building and Arts and Industrial Exhibition is opened by novelist Anthony Trollope 
  • 1857 The School of Art is established 
  • 1825 Bolton Mechanics’ Institute is founded to provide educational opportunities for working people in Bolton, and art classes begin 
  • 1824 Bolton Mechanics’ Institute is inspired by the development of Mechanics’ Institutes in London and Scotland
