THE opening of a controversial supermarket in Little Lever is a step closer after the developers handed over the keys to Tesco.

The supermarket has been given the keys by Zerum Consult Ltd on behalf of the developers Peveril Securities and Real Estate Development Partnerships Ltd JV.

Zerum Consult has been working on the 29,500 square ft store since May, along with the building firm Bowmer and Kirkland.

The store, which is at the corner of Lever Street and Crossley Street, will employ about 150 staff, 49 of whom will come from the Tesco Metro in Market Street.

Its construction has cost about £4 million and its sales area will be about 20,000 square feet.

It has been built using eco-friendly timber frames and the existing fencing from nearby properties has been replaced with new acoustic fencing.

The store has been met with a mixed response from residents — some have said it will bring more jobs and business to Little Lever, while others are concerned that it will increase the traffic congestion.

Andrew Duffy, the site manager of Zerum Consult, said: “It has been a success for all. We are pleased with the quality of the store and the speed with which it has been built.

“This store will bring employment to an area which has been deprived — it’s a significant regene-ration. People in the area have had concerns, but we have acted on them to the best of our ability.”

As part of the development, Zerum Consult has repaved the driveways of residents’ homes in Victory Road and Ainsworth Road.

They have also treated all gardens which are affected by Japanese knotweed.

Mark Thomas, regional corporate affairs manager North of Tesco, said: “It’s really important for us to be building a new store for the customers in the community.

“The developers have liaised with the store’s neighbours on a regular basis and the feedback, on the whole, has been positive.

“The store’s location will help to bring in a significant amount of footfall which would otherwise leave the area.

“It will keep people in the town, which is a great sign for other local businesses.”

The Little Lever Tesco will have parking, a service yard and landscaping, and there will be road alterations to accommodate the increase in traffic and ease congestion.

These include making Lever Street one-way, widening Ainsworth Road and adding a puffin crossing, replacing Church Street’s zebra crossing with another puffin crossing, relocating the bus stops in Ainsworth Road and Market Street, and adding traffic-calming measures to Ainsworth Road and Victory Road.

Little Lever Tesco is expected to open around the start of November.

And now a large amount of new traffic joins a road network that is already congested..... great........

Cant see how on earth the changes they have made to the road network will make the difference needed... This was madness from day one....

Oh what fun it will be at the junction of Ainsworth Road and Church Street!

Whilst not commenting on the merits of the store itself, Little Lever has been let down again by Bolton Council, who approved planning without a full assessment of the likely traffic congestion at what has always been a terrible junction!

Wonder how much traffic will now use the Racecourse? Me for one!

looking at the alterations they have done to the junction I really cannot see how that will help with the extra traffic this store will bring. a few bumps in the road?? seriously!! and puffin crossings?? just there and conveniently placed for the convenience of Tesco. The money this organisation makes if they really wanted to help the "town" they could of invested in a proper traffic light system. everything they have put in is to suit them. As for supporting local businesses did they ever consider a local business that has been there for many years millingtons with the hgv that now have to make alternative arrangements on not practical junctions due to Tesco and their one way system. This is one villager that will not be adding to their footfall for my shopping needs i will continue to shop at my preferred shop and i will also continue to support my local business for other needs

Millingtons must have always had issues using such a bad junction as they are also on a 1 way street. I appreciate the extra corner that any HGV vehicle needs to take has it's downfalls but surely tesco are not to blame as they will have taken on board the highways agency recommendations?

Traffic issues - more traffic from outside at all times of the day is not what little lever needs..

Fresh produce - we had that already at the existing tesco...

New jobs - same as if they had placed this tesco in a far more suitable spot

More footfall for other shops - i very much doubt it!!!!

Local supermarket - already had that at existing site

Less need for car - actually more because new site is not central to little lever itself

Why would traffic from outside the area come to tesco in little lever? The current store has a limited amount of fresh produce at higher prices than the supermarket will offer as the current store is a metro. The store is nearer to a more populated area meaning more will be able to walk... Rocket science this is not

Warrior,

None of this gets round the fact that the village is busy enough at the moment and not completely reconstructing the Ainsworth Road, Lever Street, Church Street junction is going to cause absolute chaos !

As I said in my first post I was not going to comment on the store itself ( personally I'm all for it) but it has not been considered "in the round" as to its location in the village and the impact that will have on other things, traffic and the village centre being two of them!

- are you mad!! It will be a big store that will attract all around the larger area, darcy lever, radcliffe, breigmet etc, etc, all those who want to shop at tesco but dont want to go as far as farnworth!!

The store is nearer one side of little lever but not the other sides! And by the way, you were argueing this would bring more trade to little lever. How exactly would that happen when its no longer in the precinct itself, and acording to you were going to get no extra external customer from outside the village!!!?
