WORK to revamp Bolton town centre has extended on to Mealhouse Lane.

Barriers have been put up as diggers and workmen carry out work resurfacing the street at the side of Marks and Spencer.

The revamp is part of a £1.4 million scheme to spruce up the town centre, which includes coating the pedestrian pavements with a special chemical to stop chewing gum sticking to the ground.

So far Victoria Square and Hotel Street have been resurfaced, with town hall bosses also planning to redevelop Newport Street into a modern “European-style boulevard” — resulting in the loss of the charity canopy.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “The repaving scheme on Hotel Street and Mealhouse Lane is part of a revamp to improve the environment in the town centre.

“We recently extended the scheme to include the area around the Boots entrance and this work is due to finish at the end of October.

“The final part of our programme is a £1 million scheme to transform Newport Street, which is due to get under way early next year.

“We will be redesigning and repaving it to create a modern high street as part of the transformation of that area driven by the new £48 million interchange.”
