A HOODED vandal who tried to smash his way into the historic Rivington Barn — breaking a £200 window in the process.

Police are hoping that the man, caught on CCTV cameras at the estate, will be recognised by the public.

The vandal is suspected of trying to smash his way into the smaller Great House Barn at the famous estate, owned by the Salmon family.

The building houses the Tea Room and Gift Shop and is home to a wedding catering company.

It is adjacent to Hall Barn, which is regularly used to host events such as weddings or concerts.

PC Paul Harrison said: "No entry has been gained so we are looking at this as criminal damage but what other motivation could there be?

"For me they are probably looking at smashing a window and gaining entry.

"It is quite an expensive window, worth at least £200.

"We don't know, it could be someone responsible for other burglaries in the area."

No weapon used to smash the window, such as a brick, was recovered at the scene of the criminal damage, which happened at 12.10am on August 18.

The man is believed to have fled after the business's alarm sounded.

Footage shows a white man wearing a grey hooded top, with the hood up, and jogging bottoms.

The CCTV also picked up a hatchback car in the area, which drove the man away from the area.

The car, believed to carry the registration G57 CXA, drove off towards Horwich.

PC Harrison added: "I am keen to speak to the male in the photo or the registered keeper of the vehicle who could potentially provide further information to assist in progressing the matter.

"It is not every day we get such good footage to help us.

"I would ask anyone with any information to contact police on 101."

Rivington Barn is an historic Grade ll listed building believed to date back to the 12th century and still retains original features including its huge Saxon beams.
