SUMMERFIELDS Estate in Westhoughton could become the latest area to have a 20mph limit put in force.

Following complaints from residents about speeding on the estate the area has been added to list of areas across Bolton that will soon be made into 20mph zones.

Labour council candidate Anne Graham, who lives on the estate, said: "This is a safety issue and it could save lives.

"I have seen speeding first hand on the estate with people thinking that they can race round and it is dangerous.

"It is a busy estate with a lot of blind corners and parked cars and there are a lot of families that live here.

"I am very supportive of it being 20mph here because I do think they work.

"Obviously there is always going to be certain people that ignore them but on the whole I do think that they will work."

In April 2013, councillors agreed to introduce a mandatory 20mph speed limit on the majority of residential roads in the borough.

The pilot scheme, which will cost £25,000, will first tackle Little Lever and Kearsley before being implemented in Westhoughton.

Westhoughton ward councillor Christopher Peacock said: "I was contacted by a number of residents complaining about people driving too quickly around the estate particularly on roads that you can build up speed.

"I spoke to the neighbour hood policing team and asked them to see what we could do and we decided that a 20mph limit would be a good idea.

"That's when I approached the councillor for highways and transport who said that it could go on the list.

"I am really pleased that the council have put it on the list.

"I know that it won't stop everyone from speeding and I know that some people will ignore it but this sends the message out that we won't put up with people speeding."
