HE was a talented street photographer — but here Geoff Davies is seen on the other side of the camera pursuing his second love — cycling.

Anthony Bowles, president of Bolton Clarion cycling club, captured this black and white snap of Mr Davies and has paid tribute to his friend who died last month.

Mr Davies, who captured the changing face of Bolton for more than 50 years, died in his sleep at home in Columbia Road, Halliwell, on February 17 at the age of 78.

The “kind and loving” father-of-three and grandfather-of-four took more than 40,000 "social photographs" across Bolton, Manchester, Merseyside and London during his life.

But he was also a keen cyclist and rock climber — and was a “leading light” in the revival of the Bolton Clarion cycling club, which formed in 1896.

Mr Bowles said: “Geoff was greatly interested in the revival of Bolton Clarion cycling club, and played a leading part leading Sunday rides.

“He also laid the foundations of the three club reliability rides over 100, 150 and 200km, a tradition the club still carries on.”

Mr Bowles’ photograph shows Geoff, centre, with fellow members Andy Ascroft (left) and Chris Hoyle (right) in 1988 in Arnside and was taken during a 120 mile Sunday club ride.

He added: “I rode many enjoyable miles with Geoff, a natural leader, and also his son Gareth who was a competent club member also.”

Geoff’s funeral and committal was held at Overdale West Chapel on February 27.
