NEWLYWEDS endured a frightening robbery at the hands of two baseball bat-wielding thugs.

The couple and their two children have been left traumatised by the brazen raid carried out by two burglars in balaclavas.

The culprits, who had local accents, stole the white 2014-reg Volkswagen Golf GTI parked outside.

The car was the wife's birthday gift from her husband three months ago, and the ordeal came just a week after the pair married.

The wife, who does not wish to be named for fear of reprisals, said: "I was in bed, my husband was on the sofa.

"My daughter was fast asleep and she was woken up.

"Two men were kicking the front door quite a few times and then found something in the front garden which they used to try to smash the front window. Then they got a baseball bat and smashed it with that.

"One was shouting: 'Give me your keys!'

"The second one was stood by the car and shouting to his mate: 'Get in the house and get the keys.'

"The first man was was trying to climb through the smashed window and as he was, my husband thought it was better to give him the car keys.

"They ran out to the car and drove off.

"Luckily none of us was injured."

Police are investigating the robbery, which took place at 12.10am on Sunday when the couple's teenage son was also present in the property.

The raid was over within five minutes but has left a lasting impression on both parents and children.

The mother said: "I'm very angry. I'm not bothered about the car, it's more the way they have gone about it. Scumbag is too good a word for them.

"I have got a 13-year-old daughter who can't sleep. She understands what happened and she is petrified.

"I'm slowly getting over it now. I was crying all the time, but today's not been too bad.

"It just gets into your head."

The Volkswagen has not been recovered and no arrests have been made.
