TRIBUTES have been paid to one of Bolton’s amateur dramatics’ leading men, Donny Howcroft who has died at the age of 85.

Mr Howcroft, developed complications as a result of Crohn’s Disease and died on Monday, August 15, in hospital surrounded by his friends, family and members of his theatre company Nohow Productions.

The talented actor, nicknamed Mr Showbusiness, was a true star of Bolton celebrated amateur dramatics scene.

Although he never went on to develop his ability as a professional despite approaches, he together with his wife, Nora, were regularly seen on television winning the hearts of the nation in ITV’s Food Glorious Food and also the wrath of the public for finding Coronation Street’s Deidre Barlow guilty.

Mr Howcroft joined the amateur dramatics scene at the age of 30.

His wife, Nora, said: “He came into acting quite late, I was 22 and working backstage at Kearsley Amateur Operatic Society and he was in the men’s chorus.

“Soon after he played the lead in plays, he was so talented, he did not have to audition he was asked to play leads.

“The only reason he didn’t become an actor was because of the uncertainty of the profession.”

Mrs Howcroft said: “Wewere married for 42 years but been together for over 50 years.

“Donny was a true gentleman who had joy and perfection through him.”

The two went on to join Walmsley Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

It staged the world premiere of Oliver in 1968 and Mr Howcroft became the first amateur actor to play the role of the artful dodger.

He was also a supernumerary actor at the Octagon and a fantastic set designer.

Mrs Howcroft said: “He never missed a rehearsal!

“He loved the buzz and the life of the theatre and he adored every thing he did, he did not want fame, he just enjoyed doing it and to be with such lovely people.

“He loved entertaining and his family.”

She added: “He gave love and got love back.”

Mr Howcroft, worked at Warburtons in the design department, and despite not taking the step into professional acting, he together with his wife, would be extras on some of the biggest television shows and starts of Food Glorious Food. The couple became popular guests on Radio Manchester.

Mr Howcroft’s funeral will take place at Christ Church, Walmsley, today at 11am.

He will be carried in to Consider Yourself and taken out to Thank You for the Music.

Hundreds are expected to attend and said Mrs Howcroft, the service will be a celebration of his life.
