MEET the ladies of the Women's Institute — the best bra none!

They are looking to put dahlias in a D Cup with their eye-popping floral displays — turning their bras into hanging baskets.

Each bra-sket has been amply stuffed and will be showing its wares over the coming month.

The blossoming brassieres are part of a national WI sustainable gardening competition and Stoneclough’s ladies are hoping their DDs will be given an A* approval rating.

President Alison Peek said: "The national federation has challenged WIs up and down the country to make the most of their old bras by turning them into hanging bra-skets.

"We decided to embrace the gauntlet that had been thrown down!

"We asked all out members to gather up their old bras and donate them for the baskets. The only stipulation was they had to be bigger cup sizes, they were of more use, which is unfortunate for the ladies who are not so well blessed.

"Anyone with a D cup upwards was welcomed with open arms."

The bras were converted for the new loads by sewing in poaches to hold the soil and water in, before being planted up.

WI's green-fingered garment gardeners then got stuck in planting different displays of flowers, as well as one brassiere laid out with herbs and another with a couple of vegetables - including lettuce and radish.

Punters of the Horseshoe pub in Fold Road then got an unexpected eye-full when the bras were hung out in all their glory for the first time at Ringley Stocks.

Miss Peek added: "It was interesting putting them out. It was a glorious day and the last thing people going for a drink early doors were expecting to see was four women hanging out bras full of plants. It has been very well received!

"A friend of mine who is a member of a WI in Iceland came up with another idea - Blooming Boxers. We just have to find a way of taking gents old boxers and planting them up with veg. I think we will look at that next year."

The bra-skets are currently being kept in doors but will be out on display for the Kearsley Scarecrow Festival running from September 24 to 25.
