THIS week we take a look back from than 20 years at school photos from the mid-1990s.

These snaps should bring back memories for many of our readers – and some may even recognise their younger selves in the pictures.

A few of the photographs are taken from our ‘Class of’ feature, which published a different school photograph each week.

The weekly special gave many children the thrill of seeing themselves in the newspaper for the first time.

Among the more amusing images is that of Rivington and Blackrod high school headteacher, Jeff Mills, test driving a wheelbarrow ahead of the school’s annual derby classic event.

The fundraiser had been a donkey derby in previous years before action by the Animal Liberation Front caused a change in format.

Elsewhere, many readers will pine for the days when summer meant an extra-long break from the 9am-3pm ‘work’ of the schoolroom.

Indeed, it meant so much time off that some children went back to school for a few weeks at the borough-wide Holiday Language School, where fun lessons including puppetry and art prevailed.
