BOLTON Lads and Girls Club is thrilled to have won Youth Organisation of the Year at a national ceremony.

The club received the honour at the UK Youth Awards ceremony held in Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

The award came as a surprise to Karen Edwards, chief executive of the club, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have won the Youth Organisation of the Year Award we were delighted to be shortlisted in the category, let alone win.

"Gaining recognition for such a prestigious award is a real testament to the support that Bolton Lads & Girls Club provides and represents a tremendous achievement for us in our mission in making the lives of young people better.

"We believe that with the right support and skills needed, young people are capable of achieving anything they put their mind to and Bolton Lads & Girls Club will continue to provide that for them."

The award celebrates the innovative and adaptable youth organisations that have overcome challenges to support young people and their local communities, helping young people to positively progress and support them through their social development journey.

Rob Wilson, Minister for Civil Society, presented the award to the group before they were congratulated by HRH the Princess Royal.

In addition to their award they will also receive grant funding of up to £350.

The annual UK Youth Awards ceremony is a high-profile event in the charity calendar.

Since launching, the awards have honoured charities, large and small, from across the country, acknowledging their work and achievements.

This year's judges were former England footballer Sol Campbell, former Formula1 driver Nigel Mansell and Mr Wilson.

Mr Campbell said: "I know first-hand how crucial youth services are at supporting the next generation to reach their potential.

"Times can be tough for many young people and these youth groups do a tremendous job in supporting them along their journey.

"I am proud to be able to honour their achievements at The UK Youth Awards, alongside the inspirational young winners, to showcase that a positive future is possible for all young people if they are given the right role models, support and safe place to go."
