TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular member of the community who has died after being hit by a car.

Paul Broderick, aged 82, from Horwich, was crossing Green Lane, near to the junction with Carr Road, when he was in collision with a white Ford Focus car on Sunday at 2.05pm.

Mr Broderick was taken to hospital with a head injury but died on Wednesday morning.

His death has shocked and saddened the local community, where he was well known.

Mr Broderick was a keen dominoes player and was a regular every Tuesday at The Bowling Green in Horwich, where he would play.

He was popular among staff and locals and kept himself fit and active.

Landlady Susan Stewart said: "I have known Paul for seven and eight years, from when I was at St Mary's Catholic Club.

"He came in every week and was a really lovely man.

"It is very sad, we are so shocked, and the bar staff who work on a Tuesday when Paul is in are gutted.

"He would have fun banter with the staff."

She said that the pub would hold a collection in Mr Broderick's memory and that she would speak to the games league about a lasting memorial to Mr Broderick, possibly in the form of a trophy.

Miss Stewart said: "He will be missed. He would always have a pint and then take a sneaky drink from his hip flask, even though he was told he wasn't supposed to.

"He was so well know and so many tributes have been paid to him on Facebook."

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the accident.

Police Constable Peter Cunningham of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Paul’s family after such a tragic incident.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision, or has dash-cam footage, to get in touch with police."
