MANY people have already thought about their summer holidays. This year probably an even larger proportion of Boltonians than ever will be spending the holiday week at one or other of the holiday camps in various parts of the country. For holiday camp life has a particular appeal. It is impossible not to be infected by the holiday atmosphere which surrounds these camps. They are bright, gay and colourful. Flags and bunting wave in the breeze. There is music and laughter, crowds of people bent on enjoying themselves and making the most of their annual holiday.

125 YEARS AGO

February 19, 1875

ON Tuesday afternoon, about three o'clock, two colliers named Thomas Martin, Mill-street, Little Lever, aged 27 years, and William Grundy, No. 8 Court, Little Lever, aged 37 years, were found buried beneath a quantity of dirt at the Trencherbone mine of the Bradley Fold Colliery, belonging to Thomas Fletcher and Sons. The men were observed working at nine o'clock in the morning, and there were no apprehensions concerning their safety until a fellow-miner named James Liptrot observed that Martin and Grundy had not been to fetch their dinners from a place in the pit where meals were put. He proceeded to the working place of the two men, and there found them buried beneath a quantity of dirt that had fallen from the roof. He gave the alarm, and, with assistance, the men were extricated. They were dead, and apparently had been so for some time. Martin is a single man, but Grundy is married. Martin has only recently recovered from severe burns he received in an explosion of gas.
