MP probes post office attacks

A BOLTON MP is to investigate claims Little Lever Post Office is a welcoming environment for burglars.

The siting of the controversial Post Office in the corner of Little Lever precinct came under the spotlight again this week when armed raiders attacked a Royal Mail delivery van.

It was the fourth armed robbery at the post office in less than four years.

Bolton South-east MP Dr Brian Iddon said he would be speaking to ward councillors, the postmaster and customers to gauge just how strong feelings were.

He said: "I am willing to get involved and if required approach Post Office chiefs.

"I can see how the siting of the post office could offer a welcoming environment for burglars, and the rear car park could be ideal for a getaway."

Shopkeepers and customers have been campaigning for the post office to be moved to a safer, more central, position or to have the old entrance returned.

The entrance used to lead from the newsagent's directly into the post office, but was blocked off three years ago.

The new entry was created in a corner of the precinct, facing a brick wall, and leading directly into a dark alleyway to a car park.

Its vulnerability was highlighted last year by a Crown Court judge as she jailed two men involved in a previous armed robbery at the post office.

And on the very day that Judge Gillian Ruaux spoke out, the post office was raided again.

A newsagent, who did not wish to be named, said: "It is frightening for us, our families and customers who use the post office.

"As soon as the entrance was altered we complained and drew up a petition. It seems the Post Office won't act until someone is hurt or killed."

A post office spokesman refused to be drawn on the siting of the post office for "reasons of security".
