300 homes to benefit from cash windfall

A REVAMP of more than 300 homes in Bolton will go ahead following the announcement of a £6m cash injection.

The windfall will be used to upgrade a mixture of homes for rent and sale and includes a number of town centre projects.

It forms part of a drive to ease the accommodation shortage in many parts of the borough.

The cash allocation will be spent on 270 houses with improvements to properties in Halliwell, Horwich, Deane, Great Lever and Farnworth.

A further £1.6m grant will mean a total of 335 homes will be built or improved over the next 14 months.

Bolton's housing chairman Cllr Noel Spencer said: "The £7.6m total is only part of the good news, as it will be supported by a further £8m of housing association investment."

The money has been allocated by the Housing Corporation. It will be spent by housing associations in the Bolton Community Homes Partnership.

Among the schemes to be financed will be "smart" homes with the latest technology, allowing homeowners to perform tasks such as turning on the central heating by remote control.

There will also be finance for housing improvements in the Bromwich Street area, recently highlighted in the BEN as a haven for drug dealers and prostitutes.

New homes linked to the council's black and ethnic minority strategy will also be developed together with the continuation of the regeneration of private sector housing in the Oxford Grove area.

Cllr Spencer added: "Once more this is an endorsement of the council's flagship scheme."
