Dartford’s best rewarded for sporting excellence

DARTFORD Harriers Atheltic Club is celebrating after a successful night at Dartford Council's annual sports awards ceremony.

All-rounder Megan Edwards won the under-16 young sportsperson of the year.

Fromerly a middle distance runner, the Leigh City pupil switched to field events with coach Alan Champion during 2004.

Taking up the triple jump Megan broke the national junior league record and finished the year among the top triple jumpers in the UK.

The teenager also smashed records for the pentathlon and the heptathlon.

Entries for the council awards came from sports clubs across Dartford with categories for young sports persons, clubs and coaches.

Dartford Harriers were also commended in the club of the year category before Reg Wilson, 72, was awarded joint coach of the year.

Reg, who has been coaching for 30 years, got his award for his dedication to the sport.

The awards were presented by windsurfer Keith Atkinson, last year's young sportsperson of the year, and Ann Stewart, chairman of the Osterberg Union.

Elsewhere in the world of athletics, Istead and Ifield Harriers sent athletes to the Paddock Wood half-marathon and to Worthing for a pre-marathon 20-mile race.

At Paddock Wood, Martin Forder was first home for the Harriers finishing ninth out of 1,367 runners.

The Harriers did not fare so well in Worthing although Judy Bain and Vicky Goodchild smashed their personal bests by 30 minutes.
