Motorists get warning over winter driving conditions

MOTORISTS are being warned to check their vehicles and ensure they are ready for the harsher driving conditions.

As official summer time finishes this weekend and winter begins, police chiefs are giving helpful tips to people.

They are being advised to check the condition of their tyres, wiper blades and washer level.

All lights and mirrors should be replaced if faulty and drivers should make sure their oil and anti-freeze levels are correct.

Motorists are urged to take heed of weather warnings and if the weather is atrocious, they should avoid travelling and make other arrangements.

And most importantly of all, buy some de-icer.

Inspector Brian Wood, GMP's Road Safety Officer said: "We alter the clocks this on Sunday so now is the time to check or have your vehicle checked thoroughly. Winter driving puts vehicles to the test and so it is essential to ensure your vehicle is up to the job and fit for the road."

Drivers are reminded not to move off until all the windows and mirrors are cleared as this could impair their visability.
