Stars come out for VE Day

TV will give extensive coverage of Britain's VE Day celebrations this year.

The events mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe on May 8, 1945.

The centrepiece of the BBC programming will be a star-studded concert in Trafalgar Square.

Natasha Kaplinsky and Eamonn Holmes will host the free event featuring artists including Sir Cliff Richard, Richard E Grant, Daniel Bedingfield, Hayley Westenra, Heather Small, Will Young, Katie Melua and Katherine Jenkins.

They will perform contemporary and classic tracks accompanied by the quintessential wartime fixture a big band.

Celebrity guests such as Heather Mills McCartney and Dr Who star Christopher Eccleston from Little Hulton will give special readings, and the performances will be interspersed with video footage of the original 1945 Trafalgar Square celebrations.

The concert, called A Party To Remember, will be broadcast live on BBC1 and BBC local radio on May 8.

Actor Joss Ackland will present the highlight of ITV's coverage - Victory In Europe In Colour, featuring feature unseen footage, diaries and letters.
