Sir Ian can do no wrong

YOU'VE got to admire Sir Ian McKellen's attitude to his career.

The Bolton-educated knight has a much-envied reputation as a serious actor on stage and screen. But, one of his personal dreams was to play a dame in panto, so he took on the role of Widow Twankey in Aladdin to rave reviews.

He is busy fulfilling another lifelong ambition playing a role in Coronation Street as tricky author Mel Hutchwright. And now he has landed a leading role in the film from the blockbuster novel "The Da Vinci Code".

Given this terrific flexibility and try anything approach, it's only surprising that he hasn't turned up in Dr Who as a Cyberman or even gone for the lead role, complete with Gandalf beard.
