A ditch would keep them out

RE: "Fury over travellers" (Bolton Evening News, August 9). I attended the public meeting concerning traveller nuisance on Hulton Lane playing fields.

During discussions and points raised, it was stated that the council would like to fence the area off but could not find sufficient finance to do so.

Local residents do not wish to see fencing, which is costly, requires ongoing maintenance, and can be removed by travellers determined to access the area.

It does not take rocket science to see that a ditch around the perimeter, filled with hardcore and rounded off to approximately two feet above ground level, covered with the original topsoil and grass seed, is the cheapest and most effective prevention.

A relatively short period would allow it to blend in with the environment, with no further maintenance required, plus one main entrance with a suitable "extra" high and wide road hump, which may be negotiated (with care) by cars and maintenance vehicles, but would "ground" a caravan.
