Bawdy tin takes biscuit at auction

A Blackpool antiques dealer snapped up a bawdy biscuit barrel which brought a bit of raunch to an auction yesterday.

The titillating tin was sold by Shirley Kippax, widow of Bob Kippax, who owned Burnley-based Kippax Biscuits.

Thousands of Huntley and Palmers tins were sent to grocers in 1980 - before bosses realised illustrations of a garden tea party had been tampered with by a freelance designer, prompting their withdrawal from sale.

The tin went under the hammer for £120 to the antiques dealer from Blackpool during the sale at Silverwoods auctioneers in Clitheroe Auction Mart.

Mrs Kippax, who decided to sell the tin because she is moving house, said: "My husband saw Huntley and Palmers had not scrutinized the picture.

"Most were recalled. I kept it because I thought it may be valuable."
