LITTLE chefs served up a treat for their parents.
Gifted and talented pupils from seven primary schools cooked a delicious meal for their mums and dads in after being invited to use the professional kitchens at Smithills Schools.
It was organised to help youngsters widen their knowledge about the science behind making meals.
Among the dishes they prepared were vegetable soup with freshly baked bread, fruit salad, cheese and chive lattice and pizza.
Smithills School's food technology teacher, Sally Smith said: "We came up with the idea, together with primary schools, to mark National Science Week.
"The children were taught about the science involved in preparing foods, such as yeast is needed in ensuring bread rises. But it also promoted healthy eating and gave young people a chance to look round a high school."
Schools taking part in the initiative were Gilnow Primary, St Matthew CE Primary, Little Lever, Gaskell Primary, Bolton, Brownlow Fold Primary, St Michael's CE Primary, Pikes Lane Primary, Bolton, and The Valley School.
Youngsters were chosen because of their talent in a variety of subjects, especially science.
Children worked with older students at Smithills School to prepare and cook the food in readiness for their parents arriving at the end of the school day.
Aqeela Patel, aged nine, who attends Gaskell Primary, said: "I got to see how yeast works. I found out also that healthy food can also be tasty. It was a fun session."
Parent Norman Willber said he was delighted to see son Sam, aged nine, cooking.
He said: "Events like this are good, we are from the fast food and convenience food generation and it is important for youngsters to learn about healthy eating.
"The food they cooked was delicious, I could certainly get used to this."
Sam added: "It was fun cooking. We spent the afternoon having talks about the how science and food are linked and then cooked our own food. I don't know if I would cook for my dad everyday though."
