THERE may be gloomy economic predictions post-Brexit nationally but at the Big Bolton Business Expo the mood was definitely upbeat.

The annual event at The Bridge Centre in Bradford Street was bigger and better than ever, according to organisers David and Gaynor Ramsden of marketing and business support franchise thebestofbolton

“We’ve got more than 90 local businesses represented here today, plus local charities and voluntary organisations,” explained Mr Ramsden.

“That’s more than we have ever had before, and the number of visitors – 548 – is also a record for this event. Interestingly, 200 of those visitors registered to attend after the Brexit result.

“I know there has been much made of national concern for businesses and the economy after the EU vote but we have had a very positive response from companies at the Expo who are all here for business and making new contacts and suppliers.”

This view was echoed by Jayne Hart, director of Horwich-based solicitors Amity Conveyancing. “I have had two clients cancel after Brexit but I put that down to the initial general uncertainty,” she said.

“Once the political leadership is sorted out, I think things will settle down and there is already definitely a positive business vibe here and among many local companies I’ve spoken to.”

The early signs were good for the annual Expo which easily attracted an impressive line-up of sponsors, including this year’s main sponsor RBS. Other sponsors include Global Policing, Carrs Pasties, Rijo42, Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme, Print Hub Design, Kip McGrath Education Centre, Fieldings Porter, BCC Cars, Bolton FM and the Bolton News.

Several businesses were exhibiting at the Expo for a second or third time like photographer Julie Lomax who said: “This an excellent showcase for my work and I’ve already had several inquiries. I’m really pleased with the results so far.”

Mr Ramsden was delighted with the Expo, and the local community’s response to it. “There is a really good cross-section of businesses here,” he stated. “It shows not only that we have a very vibrant local economy but that GB is definitely open for business.”
