Driver's blast over unlit warning signs

DRIVERS are being kept in the dark because the bulbs in illuminated street signs and bollards are not being replaced.

Roy Sammons, chairman of the Bolton Advanced Motorists group, has blasted highways chiefs in Bolton after carrying out a survey of roads between the Bolton-Salford border and Horwich.

Mr Sammons found that of the 53 warning and speed limit signs he passed, 41 had bulbs which were not working.

And of the 114 bollards and poles he passed, 24 were also unlit.

Mr Sammons said: "I am disgusted. I don't like to see the day-to-day routine stuff being left behind and ignored. Why would you put something in place if you are not going to maintain it?"

Mr Sammons conducted his survey taking a route from the Salford boundary along the A6 to the Chequerbent roundabout, the A58 towards Bolton, left along Beaumont Road, then left on to Chorley New Road towards Horwich.

He said: "If this is typical of the rest of Bolton then there must hundreds, if not thousands of lamps on road signs not working at night - and they are all intended to make driving on the roads safer."

Cllr Nick Peel, Bolton Council's executive member for environmental services, said that maintenance teams regularly toured Bolton at night to replace broken bulbs.

He said: "We have people who go about the borough in the hours of darkness to check these things. I would urge people like Mr Sammons and other members of the public to let us know so we can put them right."

Cllr Peel also said that in this year's budget settlement, an extra £1million would be ploughed into the highways.

"The bulk of that money, around £750,000, will be spent on improving the fabric of the roads and pavements," he said Extra cash will also go into emergency works and improving footpaths but street furniture, including bollards and road sign lighting, will not get any extra cash this year.

Cllr Peel added: "We can do almost double what we had planned for residential areas which is tremendously good news. The highways department have not been in this position for a long time.

"All the things that would have started in 2009/2010 have all been brought forward."

councillor peel would like us to ring and tell them, yet in the next breath they have people touring the area at night????mmm well they are nt doing a very good job are they....Mr Peel wants to wake and realise that "us" the council tax payers are getting fed up with the lack of responsibilty from this council....perhaps if we started reducing our council tax to compensate they might take notice...or the other answer is to make formal complaints that way it is registered against the council.......

If people are already doing it why do we need to tell the council which lamps need replacing?

street furniture, including bollards and road sign lighting, will not get any extra cash this year.

We don't want extra, we just want a minimum acceptable standard!!

Typical of this council, they charge a fortune to provide no service and then tell us if we want to receive any service at all, we need to pay more in council tax.

No doubt Cllr Peel spoke to BN on his mobile phone from his company car parked on incorrectly painted double yellow lines.

I, for one, would like to congratulate Cllr Peel on the new Traffic Calming scheme on New Chapel Lane. He (and his team) have plunge to previous unheard of depths in ineptitude. I refer in particular to the sign that is just in front of the Chapel as you travel from Chorley New Road. The picture on the sign shows a small red arrow in the direction of travel, with a large white arrow coming the other way (showing that oncoming traffic has priority) HOWEVER the wording under the sign states that you have priority - which are we to believe, the words or the pictures? How long before we have a nasty accident there? How long before the council are sued for this really really bad signage?. Is Billy Smart recruiting, as we have a bunch of clowns on our council he could take his pick from.

Councillor Peel is very quick to reply to a story when he wants to get his point across (that it's not all labours fault when we quite clearly know that it is!) but will you find him replying to this? Will we heck! The area that i live in has potholes, speedhumps and then potholes ON speedbumps. Get rid of labour. Lets get someone in who knows what they're doing! It's all part of the master plan. If they turn the lights out on the signs, more chance of you speeding hence £60 + 3 points. That's what it's all abouth these days - £60 and 3 points. Mark my words. Safety has got nothing to do with it. If councillor Peel was so bothered about safety, he should first look at Deane Road at the bottom (near the casino). I remember when we had 2 lanes here. Now, we have single file traffic, a cycle lane (that hardly gets used - just like all the other pointless cycle lanes) and islands. Thank You Mr Peel. Because of narrow minded, "look at me everbody. I'm a councillor" people like yourself, if i have to ever go here during rush hour, i know it's more dangerous than it ever was before. Thank You very much Mr Peel. As i'm sure you've learnt by now, making 2 lanes into one will ALWAYS solve the problem!

Hi Abbott,

Clearly things get lost in translation when you speak to a reporter. Paul Keaveny is a good reporter but he didnt really quote me correctly.

What I said was Bolton Council has a night time ispectorate that routinely checks for streetlamps and bollards etc that are not working. They do pick up a lot of maintainance issue on these inspections but I also said that with thousands of miles of carriageway (yes -thousands) we would need an army of inspectors to cover every street in the borough. I therefore said that there is absolutely nothing wrong in the public doing their bit, and providing information to the department.

Taking the attitude of - well its not my responsibility just doent wash with me. Imagione if we refused to give information to the police, because the police employ people who should do this for us.

We are all residents of this town, its our town. We either sit back and say - not my job guv, or we actuallly do our bit for the town we live and work in.

Hi Badboi,

here's my reply that you said I wouldnt send.

I note your amusing comments.

I have tried to debate and enage with people on this blog in the past, but unfortuanetly have found it impossible as people tend to go off the subject and become abusive.

PS Badboi,

if you want to contact me direct you may do so. An extra £1 million has gone into the highways programme this year (and future years) and it may be that the streets you are referring to are on the planned programme, or have now been brought forward due to the extra cash we are spending on residental roads and pavements. If it isnt on the programme, I will let you know why.

If you are serious you will email me.

Mr Peel Thank you for the reply, its unfortunate that you feel that you cant reply on this blog, but I do understand.
Obviously there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes within the council, however it seems that things only get done when us the tax payers start whinging...something which I ve resisted doing in years gone by,but needs must now...I m paying 170-00 p/month for council tax yet get very little for it..the road near me is horrible, the bin men come and might empty all the bins if were lucky, but then Ill probably have to clean up after them,so you can understand why were a bit peeved.....
