A JUNCTION is to be marked by Bolton Council after a driving instructor called for a review of “dangerous” crossroads.
Rob Whittle, aged 30, has been teaching in Bolton for five years and has seen a number of crashes and near misses at various locations in the town.
He arranged a meeting with highways officers and pointed out junctions that he thought could be improved.
Mr Whittle has now been told that the junction at Morrison Street and Paulhan Street in Great Lever is to be marked.
He said: “This is good news as not only is the junction potentially dangerous, it is also a very common junction where learners fail their driving test because of the lack of markings.”
But the council has said some of the junctions cannot be altered.
One of the junctions Mr Whittle identified as potentially dangerous was the crossroads near McDonald’s in Derby Street, Bolton.
He said it was particularly bad, with drivers turning right from University Way and Fletcher Street having to wait in the middle of the road.
He suggested a right turn light be added to traffic lights on each road. But the council said this would not be practical.
A spokesman said: “It would be necessary to hold the straight-ahead traffic in order to introduce a dedicated right-turn phase. The junction is already congested and any such measures are likely to increase queues and delays. As a result, we cannot introduce this measure in the immediate future.
“In the longer term, we will look to achieve some improvement as part of any redevelopment within this area.”
