DIDN’T your heart soar ever so slightly when it was reported that the 100,000th car had used Mike Watts’ toll road between Bath and Bristol?
You might remember that Mike mortgaged his home to finance a private 400-yard track through a field that spared drivers a 14-mile detour on country lanes after a landslip.
He needed 100,000 drivers to use the road at £2 a time to make it pay and he is now close to breaking even.
It was built without planning permission and a restrospective application is due to be assessed soon.
You’ve really got to applaud not only his entrepreneurial spirit but his bravery.
I’m not sure how many of us would have put our homes on the line for such a precarious scheme, but all the very best to Mike.
