ACCORDING to the ‘Town Hall Masterplan’ in Wednesday’s Bolton News, it seems things just got better.

Not only is it to benefit from a café in the sun but also a restaurant in the shade. This exploitation of the Town Hall basement as a source of income, predictably extolled and designed by J. M. Architects, seems yet to be allocated a price tag. In what year, one wonders, will the break-even point be, and what the reinstatement costs should the entire venture, along with the Town Hall’s iconic reputation, flop?

Our man for all reasons, Councillor Morris, reassuringly declares himself to be ‘not a Philistine,’ and will do nothing to ruin the fabric of the building.

The proposed café area, with lowered to street-level windows, shows clearly how the fabric of the building will be ruined and at how nocturnal entry and egress to and from this hitherto unblemished asset of Bolton will be compromised and its contents endangered.

We are assured that ‘any work that we do has to have the blessing of English Heritage.’

Makes one suppose the outraged public may be barking up the wrong trousers.
