Recently, a good friend of mine received a card through the door. The card was wishing him a “Happy Eid” on behalf of Labour MP David Crausby.

My friend is not a Muslim and this was the second year he had received such a card from his MP.

Responding to his enquiry as to why the card was received Mr Crausby explained that some Muslim councillors had picked his friend’s name from the electoral register presumably because my friend’s surname sounded Islamic (it actually didn’t).

When my friend made the point to Mr Crausby that it would only be fair if the same Muslim councillors could hand out either Easter or Christmas cards to a small selection of Christian church-goers at any church in the ward, then Mr Crausby responded by saying it would be “inappropriate” for this to happen.

I was always led to believe that councillors and politicians were elected to represent ALL sections of the community. In this troubled world we live in shouldn’t our leaders be making equal effort in reaching out to all minorities in the ward and not just to one particular group who happen to have councillors of the same faith sat on the council?
