AUTISM is a health problem that is often misunderstood.
Yet, there are around 700,000 people in the UK on the autism spectrum, suffering from a lifelong developmental disability that affects how they communicate with and relate to other people.
They see, hear and feel the world differently. They share certain difficulties but being autistic affects each one in a different way. Some have learning difficulties, mental health issues or other conditions.
There is no cure and, together with their families, autism is a part of daily life for 2.8 million people.
Unfortunately, there is often little public sympathy or understanding, either. So it was especially heartening to see that, to celebrate World Autism Day, The Light cinema in The Market Place had its first ever autism-friendly screening with the film’s sound turned down and dim lights left on.
Let’s hope this is a first positive step that others will emulate.
