COUCILLOR Sue Haworth, trade union leaders such as Tom Hanley and Labour supporters Joan Pritchard-Jones, Eric Hyland, Ian Greenhalgh and Simon Pearce who have all written on the Letters Page continue to live in denial of the extent of the damage the last Labour Government did to our economy.

They left the country nearly bankrupt when they were voted out which is why any subsequent government would have had to make drastic cuts.

We all want most of the things that they and the Labour Party want, except nationalisation which has to be paid for, but unfortunately we do not have the money to do so without a strong economy.

It is the private sector which creates the wealth of the economy and the public sector by virtue of what it does which spends the money to provide the services which we need. You cannot have the latter without the former.

History has proved that whenever we have had a Labour government, it has spent more money than we have and has had to borrow and take us further into debt to appease its supporters and remain in power. The subsequent governments have been left to clear up the mess and face the wrath of people like the aforementioned correspondents.

The Labour council does the same thing. They blame the cutbacks for lack of money for social care in the community and then waste money on 20mph speed limit signs in every residential area in the town.

It is very difficult to drive at that speed and it is only the responsible drivers who try to keep within the limit. There is nobody to police the situation so those who speed will continue to do so as they do on Armadale Road, Ladybridge.
