WITH reference the accident on Glynne Street, Farnworth on June 6 'Farnworth grandmother's shock after car crashes into wall of her home'.

Last April I reported to the council's highways department that the marked parking bays on Glynne Street. Farnworth, were too close to the road junctions, with the result that vehicles parked in these bays make it difficult for drivers to turn out safely from the side roads onto Glynne Street.

The Highway Code Rule 243 states: "Do not park opposite or within 10 meters of a road junction".

I received a reply from Joe Fox, Principle Engineer at the highways and engineering division saying that the informal parking bays are part of a traffic management scheme to reduce vehicle speeds and improve road safety.

He also quoted accident statistics and said there had only been one slight injury collision on this road in the past five years. Well now there has been two accidents resulting in injuries to three people and extensive damage to an elderly person's home. Luckily no pedestrians were involved, if they had been they would probably been fatally injured.

It would appear that the parking bays have not succeeded in slowing down vehicles or making this busy road safer.
