I RETURNED from a working assignment on Wednesday via the newly built Bolton Interchange at 10pm and was waiting for my bus when I needed to visit the toilet.

On arrival at the loos, a man in a high-vis jacket was about to lock up the facilities, but grudgingly let me in.

After I came out, I asked him why he was locking up the toilets when there were still buses running and many people still on the station.

He replied that he was about to go home, because his shift was ending.

My question is this. How can it be that £48 million is invested in a spanking new bus/rail interchange, only for its facilities to be no more accessible than the ones that were available at the now derelict bus station in Moor Lane?

The man in question and a female colleague informed me there were not enough staff for the toilets to be open the whole time the buses are running.

If this is true, it is a damning indictment of what already an over-priced bus service.

As a frequent bus user, I have also noticed the tendency of staff driving buses to talk to passengers — their customers, let’s not forget — like they are second class citizens without a brain cell between them.

Bus bosses and staff, you need to up your game and remember you’re there to provide a service that is convenient to the public — not just yourselves.
