Animal suffering can’t be defended

I SEND my support to the intelligent people who recently highlighted the barbaric practice of foie gras production.
Surely any compassionate person will be against this.
Animals do not have a human voice and it is the responsibility of enlightened people to ensure that ill treatment is publicised and hopefully ended.
Can anyone actually defend animal cruelty? No religion or faith endorses animal suffering for man's pleasure and greed.
