AS a member of the Local Government Pension Scheme I am writing to express my concern at the misinformation campaign on this matter by the mainstream media.
Just as there is no mention of tax dodgers and bankers being responsible for the necessity of ‘efficiency savings’ (cuts to you and me), the fact that councils took payment holidays to smooth the move from Poll Tax to Council Tax is never mentioned.
When I joined the local government pension scheme I was told that if I made a contribution from my wages, the employer would also make a contribution to help me provide for myself when I retire.
Sadly the employer reneged on their side of the deal, leaving a deficit in the pension fund.
I, like many of my colleagues, am currently considering leaving the scheme and letting the state pay for all my needs when I retire as I will only be penalised for trying to provide for myself when I retire if I have income from a personal pension.
