Four stars thanks to council staff

REGARDING the letter entitled “private and public sector work ethic differs this way”, October 22, I would be interested to find out where “name and address supplied” gets their information from, as it certainly isn’t based on fact.

Here are the facts: Public sector employees have contractual hours that they must work like any other employed person. If they are asked to do overtime, then they would be paid for this just like I would expect any other employee to be paid for this.

If staff are not paid for overtime, then that is because of unscrupulous employers, as for the “it’s not my job mentality” that he refers to, well this could be based on many factors such as lack of training, health and safety etc, which is in the best interest of the employer and the employee.

As for not needing unions, it is well known that a union workplace is a happy workplace. Unions are there to accompany members to ensure that the correct procedures are followed NOT to cover up for members who have evidently done something wrong in the workplace.

Finally how can he/she possibly say that the public sector is full of slackers?

You would have to be out with every worker at every moment of their working day, which is impossible, so name and address supplied look at the statistics because Bolton Council would not be awarded four stars if wasn’t for their dedicated hard working staff.
