Benefits bill backlash is welcome

IT is good to see the Government face a backlash against the attack on benefits.

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats want to slash the number of people who claim Disabilities Living Allowance by 20 per cent.

They also plan to extend humiliating assessments run by private companies to force disabled people to prove they need benefits.

Many readers may not realise that as many as 40 per cent of assessments that go to appeal are overturned.

Disabled people have been protesting at the Government Welfare Reform Bill. Bishops have spoken against these benefits cuts. The House of Lords recently blocked the coalition’s plans for a universal cut on benefits.

A small group of disabled people and carers has also launched an online Petition that readers can support — epetitions.
